Un grupo de expertos en Ingeniería y Construcción del Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) recomendó monitorear de forma permanente las poblaciones aledañas al Volcán Turrialba con el fin de que se vigile de cerca el impacto de las cenizas del coloso sobre esas tierras.

Durante el VIII Congreso Nacional de Suelos, que se realizó entre el 18 y el 20 de marzo, los investigadores coordinados por el funcionario Miguel Chinchilla, presentaron los resultados de un estudio hecho días posteriores a las erupciones del Turrialba durante el 2014.

La investigación denominada “Mineralogía y química de las cenizas volcánicas del volcán Turrialba y sus efectos en los suelos de la región” asegura que aunque los depósitos de cenizas del 2014 fueron de poco espesor, lograron identificar unos ocho elementos químicos en las zonas.

“Los análisis químicos muestran la presencia de cenizas ácidas, altas en calcio, medias en magnesio, cobre, zinc, manganeso y bajos contenidos de potasio y fósforo”, señalaron los investigadores.

Para Chinchilla, se vuelve necesaria la vigilancia constante tanto en la zona del Volcán como en lugares circunvecinos. Ello dibujaría un panorama “mucho más certero de cuál es el impacto real de la ceniza del coloso sobre la calidad de los suelos”.

“En caso de que se presentaran nuevas erupciones de mayor magnitud y con la misma composición mineralógica se podrían esperar mayores impactos sobre la acidez potencial del suelo y afectación de la vegetación, agricultura y actividades productivas”, indicó Chinchilla.

La investigación se realizó entre el 30 de octubre y el 5 de noviembre de 2014, cuatro meses antes de las nuevas erupciones registradas este mes.
